With the weather becoming autumnal, it’s the perfect time to be thinking about scrummy food and the fast approaching Arundel Food Festival. This is second time the town has hosted a food festival and what makes it so exciting is that everyone gets involved, from local restaurants to independent shopkeepers and local farmers caring for landscapes in the new South Downs National Park.
I am hoping to go along to the Famous Arundel Processional Supper. This is hosted at three of the popular independent restaurants around the town – with the aim of sourcing all main ingredients from within 10 miles. Not forgetting the delicious meal due to be served in Arundel Castle to close the festival. The menu is based on local ingredients, includes Sussex wines and is cooked by four of the town’s talented chefs. In between these two events are an exciting Wild Food Foraging morning, ending with a hot lunch of foraged “finds”, and a Sussex picnic lunch which will be served during a walk exploring Food and Farming in the South Downs with a National Park Ranger.
The festival will begin with a larger than ever Farmers Market lasting longer than usual until 2.30pm. Agenda 21 and the National Trust have joined together to encourage people to bring along leftover apples for pressing. There are lots of things to taste and try from chutneys and pickles to beer! And on the final Saturday – which is the start of half term – there is a family food day with activities for all the family from cup-cake workshops to treasure hunts.
The ever-popular Book Ferret will be hosting an evening of food inspired poetry, which should be fun and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust are giving advice on feeding the birds. There will be walks and the opportunity to meet the gardeners at Arundel Castle to get tips on growing veg.
Arundel Food Festival takes place over nine days between Saturday, October 15 – Sunday, October 23, 2011 at venues around the town.

Can't wait! The meal this Saturday night at Gaskyns with produce sourced from the Farmers' Market is a great idea. And the food scrabble. And the foodie treasure hunt next Friday... Going to need a new belt by the end of it all; not enough holes on mine!
