This year at Pelham House we have asked five very diverse artists to exhibit with us during the Artwave Festival.
We are very pleased to have John Harmer back for a second year. John is a Sussex based painter who has exhibited throughout the South East. His paintings may have their genesis in a seen or remembered image, but they are constantly open to change and revision. This is evident in the paintings surfaces, which are usually highly textured and dense with layers of paint. . He explains "for me this open-ended approach is what makes painting such an exciting and compelling medium."
Our other painter, Mark Glassman is an Artwave favourite as he also exhibits at the Driftwood venue in Seaford. He explains that his paintings are “an on-going dialogue between my vision and the Sussex land and seascape that surrounds me and I continue to experiment with the paint medium, abstracted forms, fluid and textural qualities of paint, water and canvas.” His work is extremely eye catching and fresh and a great asset to our venue.
Nathan Bayliss is exhibiting a series of ink drawings on paper of familiar idyllic scenes. His small but intriguing snapshots are reminiscent of a by-gone era. They are stripped back to reveal simplistic gestures and a pared down, distorted pallet. Nathan Bayliss is originally from Kendall in the Lake District but is now based in Sussex.
Lucy Boize originally trained as a Sculptor at The University of Brighton but has recently turned her hand to Textile Art. These pieces are based on the seven Chakras and their associated colours. Lucy lives and works in Lewes.
Emily Warren exhibited with us at last year’s Artwave and we are delighted that she was able to come back, as her pieces were extremely popular and were a real talking point for our visitors. Emily is a local illustrator and maker. Her eccentric animal heads offer a more palatable take on hunting trophies, you so often see in old houses like Pelham House. Emily’s animals will be residing above the reception fireplace for a couple of months. You can’t miss them!
