Traditional country sports have enjoyed an upsurge in interest over the last few years and visitors to the 2014 Autumn Show & Game Fair at the South of England Showground in Ardingly are encouraged to ‘come and have a go’ at the many activities and enjoy the best of country life at autumn harvest time.
Thousands flock every year to enjoy displays from Warrenby Gundogs, fly casting demonstrations from the Salmon & Trout Association, Huxley’s Birds of Prey, packs of local hounds on both days and the popular gundog scurry which will be run by the British Association for Shooting & Conservation (BASC) – and there are lots of opportunities to get involved.
Clay pigeon enthusiasts can enter the High Gun and Ladies High Gun competitions and the Team Shoot Challenge, organised by Dan Kerwood and his daughter Charlotte – who added a fourth Commonwealth Games Gold Medal to her collection this year and a member of team GB in both London and Rio in 2016. Complete beginners including younger members of the family can also try their hand at shooting and can enjoy transport in vintage trailer tours to and from the clay pigeon shoot.
Visitors can look forward to some spectacular displays from the National Vegetable Society and the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies celebrating the harvest and marking the grand finalé of the Society’s Year of Horticulture. Creative craft displays from WI members from across East & West Sussex will also be on show in the Norfolk Pavilion.
Other attractions include terrier racing and the Donkey Show (on Sunday), as well as plenty of children’s entertainment, including kite flying, Punch & Judy and a beautiful vintage fairground. Dog lovers are welcome to bring their dogs on a lead and will enjoy the spectacle of beautiful breeds, from lapdogs to gundogs, which visitors invariably bring along to the show.
A variety of rabbits, poultry and farm animals will be on display, together with a collection of vintage agricultural vehicles from a bygone era of farming. Visitors can also enjoy a great range of shopping, including countryside fashion and equipment, regional foods and crafts and much more.
