Starting Monday 06 October, Gypsy opens at Chichester Festival Theatre with Imelda Staunton leading a stellar cast as the indomitable Mama Rose.
Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy is considered by many to be the greatest of the Broadway musicals. It tells the story of ambitious showbiz mother Mama Rose who treks across America with her daughters Baby June and Louise in search of success with their homespun vaudeville act. As times change, Mama Rose is forced to accept the demise of vaudeville and the rise of burlesque, as well as her daughters’ quest for autonomy.
Featuring classics such as Let Me Entertain You, Rose’s Turn and Everything's Coming Up Roses, Gypsy is both moving and spectacularly entertaining.
This production reunites key members of the cast and creative team that staged Chichester’s award-winning production of Sweeney Todd which went on to enjoy an acclaimed West End run. Imelda Staunton plays the legendary Mama Rose. She teams up again with Jonathan Kent, who directed her in Sweeney Todd (2011), a performance earning her the 2013 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Jonathan Kent’s most recent production for Chichester was Private Lives which has recently been broadcast in cinemas across the UK.
Lara Pulver returns to Chichester to play Louise following her performance in Uncle Vanya (2012). Kevin Whately, familiar to many as Lewis (ITV), makes his Chichester debut as Herbie.
Gypsy runs from Mon 6 October – Sat 8 November 2014 at Festival Theatre, Chichester.
