Saturday 14 July sees 36 riders take on the wind and waves in Worthing, battling it out in The Big Air Open Kitesurfing Classic which is held for the first time in the town.
Part of the Olympic Torch Relay Weekend, The Big Air Open has been organised by kitesurfer Lewis Crathern and Breathe Unity and supported by Worthing Borough Council, and it is set to become a classic Kitesurfing event well beyond the Olympic year.
Based on a ‘how high can you jump format’ and with points awarded for the maximum height reached, the competitors will be going through a total of 28 heats with the final heat determining who will be taking the first ever Big Air Open winner trophy home. The winner will also be awarded a cheque of £800, sponsored by Kingsley Eco Solutions, as well as a Slingshot Fuel 2012 Kite (rrp £1199), a Garmin 910XT (rrp £359.99) and a bottle of Champagne.
Some other great prizes have been put up by the sponsors and supporters of The Big Air Open, including a Slingshot 2012 Mayhem Kiteboard, RRD 2012 Poison Camo Kiteboard, Xcel Windseries Wetsuit, Dakine Rucksack, BEST waist harness, Cabrinha 2012 EVA Wakeskate Board (Jason Stone Pro Model) sponsored by Kitesurfkings and various ION kit.

Twelve wildcards were granted to local riders in order to encourage participation and involvement in high profile sporting competitions. The judges for the 2012 edition are Ali Barrett, Luke Dennis and Jim Gaunt.
A ‘wake to kite’ warm up event will be held at the Lagoon Wake Park, Hove Lagoon, from 2-4 pm on Friday 13 July where the competitors can meet and get some additional training in for The Big Air Open the following day. Spectators, families, friends are fans are welcome to come and watch too.

The Big Air Open takes place from 9am to 6pm on Saturday 14th July on Worthing seafront (near Marine Gardens).
Spectators, kitesurf enthusiasts and anyone who wants to get in the spirit of the Olympic Torch Relay Weekend is invited to come down to The Big Air Open to watch (free of charge), cheer on the guys and girls and be inspired by the exceptional performances on the water.
The prize giving and after party will take place from 8 pm to late at Tangerine Bar on Worthing’s seafront with DJ Sussex looking after the tunes.
