Bolebroke Castle
Bolbroke Castle exteriorAshdown Forest may ring bells for most as the home of Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore. It's not surprising that the location was inspiration for Christopher Robin and his antics when you witness the beauty of the surrounding countryside and note its potential for fun and adventure. This area is also famous for Bolebroke Castle, Henry VIII’s getaway retreat, used when he was hunting boar and venison in the forest nearby.

Bolebroke is the earliest brick building in Sussex, dating back to 1480. Surprisingly, it doesn’t look like a traditional castle from the outside having the appearance more like that of a stately home. Inside, the rooms tell the same story. Cosy rather than grand, the features have been well maintained by the various Dukes and Earls that have owned the property since the days of Henry VIII. That said, original features such as beamed ceilings and 16th century furniture still remain. It comes as no surprise that Bolebroke was chosen as the location for the successful film, The Other Boleyn Girl. The building is steeped in history and tells a magnificent story of how Henry VIII courted Ann Boleyn, who lived at Hever Castle, a mere five miles away. The secluded setting is also home to some local wildlife, including deer and pheasant, roving through the surrounding woodland.

Bolbroke Castle interiorVisitors can immerse themselves in the past with tours and games that take them back to this period; you can discover what it was really like to live like a king by staying in one of the castle’s hotel rooms. Bolebroke offers a range of accommodation options to suit any budget, from single rooms to the deluxe King’s Bed Chamber, complete with 4-poster bed and private lounge. During your stay, guests and visitors can take part in the fantastic medieval banquets held throughout the year. With authentic costumes, entertainment and a hearty, medieval-inspired menu, the Elizabethan period can be relived at Bolebroke Castle. Most visitors will be surprised at the number of activities on offer within the grounds: Get transported back to modern day with paintballing and off- road buggying, or keep things authentic with a round of archery set around the beautiful lakes.

Bolebroke Castle is a beautiful attraction in East Sussex, whether just visiting for the day, or staying in its accompanying hotel. The 30 acres of grounds are simply beautiful, and the castle itself is the perfect place for visitors of all ages to come and learn about some of the most infamous figures in English history.
