Cycling in Brighton and Hove has grown substantially over recent years. With a commitment to promoting healthy and environmentally friendly travel, Brighton Council is currently extending cycle lanes, cycle parking and other cycling facilities city-wide.
There are cycle lanes across Brighton city, inclyding along the seafront, Hove to Hangleton, and Lewes Road. Many of which are part of the National Cycle Network. The city's north-south cycle freeway provides a link between the Downs, from the Dyke Railway Trail in Hangleton to the seafront, via Hove station. The southern section along Grand Avenue and The Drive is a motor-vehicle free, European-style freeway.
In the city, Brighton's coastal routes take you from the debonair promenades of Hove's beach huts, past Brighton's top tourist attractions, towards the Marina and the stunning cliff paths of Saltdean and Peacehaven. However, if you want to get out of the city, a wide range of cycle paths decorate the grand South Downs, just on the city's doorstep.
The National Cycle Network is a safe, high-quality network of quiet lanes and traffic-free paths. The network includes two main routes in the Brighton area:
Running along the East Sussex coast from Brighton to Camber, NCN Route 2 includes many delights such as dramatic chalk and sandstone cliffs, the stunning South Downs, quiet beaches, and the natural beauty of Pevensey Levels and Romney Marsh. The route is 70 miles, and can be broken up into more manageable chunks thanks to Sussex's rail service, which means you're never far away from a train station.
Route 21 of the National Cycle Network runs south from Greenwich via East Grinstead, all the way to Brighton and then Eastbourne. London to Brighton is 56 miles in total, a novel challenge for the fittest among you. Included in this route is the Cuckoo Trail: an 11-mile path through the picturesque Sussex Countryside which is traffic-free. This woodland boasts breathtaking views as well as flora, fauna, and wildlife. A great rest stop on your cycling holiday.
