CFT 2011-12 Winter Season

Chichester Festival Theatre’s Winter season brings distinguished actors, award-winning companies, and acclaimed writers and directors to Sussex. We expect high quality drama; winter 2011 also brings opera, dance, comedy, music and shows for children and young people, including an enchanting adaptation of a classic story for Christmas.

Festival Theatre:

14 - 19 November - The Madness of George III
 This epic production weaves drama, politics and humour into a vivid portrait of English history. Written by Alan Bennett with David Haig returning to Chichester in the title role.

21 - 26 November - Dr Marigold and Mr Chops
Two one-man plays, written by Charles Dickens and performed by Simon Callow. One tells of a travelling salesman who adopts a girl, the other of a freak show performer who wins the lottery and a place in society.

28 November - 03 December - Basket Case
A new comedy about an unreliable charmer, played by Nigel Havers, his ex-wife and their family friend.

05 - 10 December - Christmas Concerts
The Choir of Chichester Cathedral and The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines (Royal Band) Portsmouth joined by Close Company, and local students for a programme of music, carols, readings and poems, all compiled and presented by actor and director Philip Franks.

17 - 31 December - The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Get into a festive mood with this adaptation of C S Lewis classic. Staged by Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, it features original music and enchanting puppetry.

03 - 08 January - Moscow City Ballet
One of Russia’s most successful and popular touring companies return with productions of festive favourites The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet.

17 - 21 January - Swallows and Amazons
A new musical production of Arthur Ransome's delightful story of an idyllic childhood by Helen Edmundson, writer of Coram Boy and Neil Hannon from The Divine Comedy.

26 January - 04 February - Yes, Prime Minister
Reimagined for the stage by original writers Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back are facing a country in financial meltdown.

Carl Rosa Opera present Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic depiction of class and the political system, in which the topsy-turvy world of Parliament is invaded by fairies.

01 - 05 November - The Wild Bride
Performed by Kneehigh on Tour this is the tale of a heroine forced into the wilderness after being sold to the Devil.

15 – 26 November - Lovesong written by Abi Morgan
Performed by Frantic Assembly, the play intertwines a couple in their 20s with the same man and woman a lifetime later.

29 November - 03 December - The Debt Collectors
This new play written and directed by John Godber depicts two out of work actors forced into the world of debt recovery – a job they despise, but are made for.

05 - 10 December - Midsummer Night's Dream
Theatre Company Filter mix music, sound and video with stylised physical movement in this innovative new production, with music and sound from The London Snorkelling Team.

12 - 15 December - Snow Play - children's show

A gently humourous insight into growing older disgracefully, written and performed by Virginia Ironside.

07 - 11 February - Ring a ding ding - children's show by Oily Cart

13 - 18 February - The Sound of Music
