Welcome to the Sussex historic house surrounded by England's longest water filled moat.
There are seven acres of grounds and gardens to explore including the moat walk, kitchen garden, medieval medicinal garden, water garden, nature room, sculpture trail, playground and the Iron age roundhouses. On selected days garden tours are conducted by the head gardener.
Dating back to the 13th Century, the Priory has been occupied continuously ever since, and so offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities to celebrate its history. In the activity kitchen you can try your hand at some of the kitchen tasks from days gone by, or visit the evacuees’ bedroom where you can play with the toys or make a paper aeroplane.
The working watermill is open daily from 2pm, and if you visit on a weekend, you could see the forge being used by the Blacksmith. The Michelham Bowmen practise archery every Saturday afternoon on the South Lawn and offer free ‘have a go’ sessions for visitors of all ages.
Event days during the year include our popular Game & Country Fair, and family activity days during the school holidays where good use is made of the Elizabethan barn to make sure the children have plenty to keep them occupied come rain or shine!
Coming in summer 2012
The new Medieval interactive gallery in the gatehouse, and weekly Sunday sessions with the ‘Tudor Housewife’ in the house itself.
Michelham Priory has ample free parking, toilet facilities, shop, café and picnic area. An ideal family day out.
