The UK’s official sunniest place is now the UK’s number one holiday-friendly destination as Eastbourne wins first place in a survey of the country’s places best suited for a staycation.

The south east resort of Eastbourne has polled at number one on the survey commissioned by Virgin Money Travel Insurance, beating one of the UK’s biggest cities Manchester who came in at second place.

Eastbourne is a grand Victorian beauty, set in South Downs countryside and surrounded by 1066 heritage. The resort’s must-sees include award winning beaches, national beauty spot Beachy Head, and summer night concerts on the seafront bandstand.

 

Along with five theatres offering top name West End shows, Eastbourne hosts major events every year featuring internationally acclaimed celebrities. Topping the event list is the AEGON International  Tennis Championship, held at Devonshire Park. Attracting top men and women players from around the world, it’s regarded as the main pre-Wimbledon grass event. With seating capacity filled to maximum, the tournament promises thrilling sets and nail-biting finals.  

Airbourne, Eastbourne’s annual free airshow, is the biggest seafront airshow in the world and returns each year with even more spectacular aerobatics and demonstrations that guarantee four days of action-packed flying fun. 

For those after something a little different, Magnificent Motors celebrates the vehicles of yesteryear; the Extreme sports festival draws a young crowd, and the town’s annual Beer Festival offers exclusive local brews.

Join the locals and skate along the five-mile promenade beginning at the contemporary Sovereign Harbour, or learn to windsurf at Spray Watersports Centre.

There’s plenty to keep kids amused too. Visit Drusilla’s Zoo and marvel at the animals before taking a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine. Have a go on the new log flume ride at Fort Fun, or make a splash in the Sovereign Centre indoor swimming pool.
