Come to Standen and discover the best example of an Arts and Crafts House open to the public in this country. Built in 1894 as a country home for solicitor James Beale, Standen is a superb example of the work of architect Philip Webb, lifelong friend of William Morris, and a leading exponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The house provides a perfect illustration of the Movement's emphasis on hand craftsmanship and traditional materials with many everyday objects in the rooms combining both beauty and function. The artistry of the Morris wallpapers is echoed in the beauty and informal character of the grounds, which overlook the Sussex Weald.
During 2007 some areas of the garden are undergoing restoration work. Information boards will describe this. For full programme of events, please see listing on our website.
Prices include a voluntary donation of 10% or more. Visitors can, however, choose to pay the standard admission prices which are displayed at the property and at www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
