 The Sussex Breakfast

The Sussex Breakfast

What is tasty, healthy, locally produced and served by 50 tourism and hospitality businesses across Sussex? An accredited Sussex Breakfast that’s what. We’ve hosted ten business focussed events across Sussex, now it’s time to raise the public profile. What are we planning.……?

Sussex boasts a wealth of local food and drink which is grown, raised and produced in the county. At its best, locally produced food is a simple but extraordinarily powerful idea. Buying food from local producers shortens the supply chain, reduces food miles and supports the Sussex economy.

Over the last three years we’ve hosted business focussed events across the county, served a Sussex Breakfast, promoted the Sussex food finder and introduced local suppliers. Around 350 people attended these and to date 43 businesses meet the criteria to be accredited Sussex Breakfast providers able to use the logo on Visit Sussex, local destination websites and their own promotional material.

This year’s activity focus is raising the public profile of the Sussex Breakfast and we’re working to get regional and national media features in food magazines.

A Sussex Breakfast is made from at least 60% of local, seasonal ingredients sourced from Sussex farms using traditional, natural methods with high animal welfare standards. It includes Sussex grown apple juice rather than orange juice. Where it makes sense due to location, seasonality and food miles, food from the neighbouring counties of Kent, Hampshire and Surrey is acceptable. The project is supported by A Taste of Sussex and the Netherfield Centre for Sustainable Food and Farming.

If you haven’t yet applied to be an accredited Sussex Breakfast provider you can collect an information pack from your local tourism officer, download the application form from you local council website or click here to request a copy.

Sussex Breakfast joined forces with British Food Fortnight to showcase Sussex as a fantastic foodie destination. The media campaign focused on Sussex food and drink festivals, farmers markets and special events taking place. It was backed by some special offers for short breaks during British Food Fortnight. Sussex registered the most activity, beating Cornwall into second place.

We enjoy serving quality local foods and the Sussex Breakfast project recognises that not everyone wants bacon, sausage and egg every day. Use these versatile ingredients in different ways to suit taste, seasonality and diet. In November a series of new workshops explores imaginative Breakfast options with menu suggestions and marketing advice for promoting your local food offer. There’s taste testing too. Keep a look out for further information on dates and venues.
Since launching Sussex Breakfast, 65 businesses have received accreditation for serving a tasty, healthy breakfast of locally produced ingredients which are ethically farmed. We’ve cooked one live in the BBC Sussex studios and fed journalists at the South of England Show media launch. If you’d like to become an accredited Sussex Breakfast business – applications from cafes and visitor attractions welcome – and at least 60% of your ingredients come from Sussex simply click here   jackie@tourism-angles.co.uk    for details.
The Provisional training dates and venues for Sussex Breakfast are as follows:

Wednesday 18th November – Battle Golf Club
Wednesday 25th November – Weald and Downland Museum, Chichester
