Sustainable Sussex

Sustainable Sussex

Eco-tourism, green, responsible, agri-tourism – whatever label you put on it Sustainable tourism makes sense. Over the past few years STP has promoted and supported initiatives which help businesses with resource efficiencies, networking opportunities and niche marketing. But times change and sustainable is no longer niche – now it’s mainstream.

We’re working with partners to create and promote tourism which is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Most STP projects have sustainability at heart. We support local produce, promote the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) and skills development workshops like green advantage.

Earlier this month the Government announced that the South Downs will become a National Park. Media attention will be on Sussex, providing a perfect opportunity to raise our profile.

STP is a partner in the multi-country Collabor8 European funded project. Working the with South Downs Joint Committee and Tourism South East, funding of £1M is available for quality standards, skills development, supporting small groups of like minded businesses, green accreditation and activities in and around the South Downs.

Part of the funding will develop a carbon offset payment system where visitors can voluntarily offset the carbon emissions from a holiday in Sussex and at the same time support vital landscape conservation work in the County. This will operate on the Visit Sussex website.

More businesses will be encouraged to achieve a Green Tourism Business Accreditation. These Bronze, Silver, Gold awards are nationally recognised by VisitBritain and Visit Sussex includes a search facility to help interested visitors find GTBS accommodation and attractions.

Local produce menus and events help to deliver distinctiveness. Matched with quality standards, highly trained and skilled workers and the rich culture and landscape we enjoy as residents – Sussex is preparing to benefit from the opportunities coming our way – sustainably.
